Here are the answers to a few of the questions that I'm most often asked...
Q: Am I allowed to copy pictures from this website for personal use?
A: Yes, that is the reason the website was created.
Q: Who is your favorite photographer?
A: Bud Jones (prints4us.com) who volunteers his time, talent, and equipment to
photograph my logos for free. Please visit his website where all proceeds go to
benefit local scholarship funds. (Nobody ever actually asks me that, but I like to
take every possible chance to give him and his website all the publicity I can!)
Q: Do you get paid money to paint logos?
A: no
Q: Then why do you do it?
A: simply to help bring pride to this great city of Somersworth which I love
Q: How long does it take to paint a logo?
A: about 4 to 6 hours per logo
Q: Do you use stencils?
A: no, I paint freehand
Q: Where did you learn to paint?
A: I guess some of it comes naturally, but most of it is just from lots of practice,
trial and error, studying other logos throughout the country, and from paying
attention in Mr. Robak's art class at Somersworth High School.
Q: What type of paint do you use?
A: aerosol cans of athletic marking paint from Pioneer Paint
Q: Is the paint bad for the grass?
A: No, the paint is made especially for use on grass.
Q: How long does a logo last?
A: A logo will usually look really good for a couple of days. Then it will slowly fade out
over a few weeks. When the grass is growing well, it will generally get mowed out
in a couple of weeks. If it is later in the season when the grass has stopped growing,
then it will show for longer a longer period.
Q: Why aren't there any pictures of your earlier logos on your website?
A: Not being a photographer myself, I never took pictures of them. So hope your
memory's good.
Q: Which logo is your favorite one?
A: whichever one I just got done painting
Q: What happens if you make a mistake?
A: I paint over it -- it happens all the time.
Q: How long does it take to dry?
A: a few minutes (unless there is dew on the grass)
Q: Does it bother you when people watch you paint?
A: When I'm just starting a logo and I have to plan it out and outline it, it doesn't
always look pretty for the first hour or so. That's when I make the most changes
(mistakes). It's easier for me to concentrate when I'm alone. Once I get it to
the point where I like it, then it doesn't bother me it all if people watch.
Q: What are your favorite things about painting logos?
A: - just seeing the pride that they bring to the players and teams
- hearing players say that it makes them feel like they're in the pros
- the people who honk as they drive by when I'm painting
- the players who take them for granted until many years later when they've
grown up and come back to thank me
- looking at the website hit counter every few weeks and being amazed at
how many people have visited the site
Q: What are the worst things about painting logos?
A: rain, mosquitoes, dew, frost, clover, dandelions, and arthritis
Q: Doesn't it make you mad when a player steps on a logo during a game?
N: No, it's part of the field -- they're supposed to step on it.
Q: How about when a player from an opposing team stomps on it on purpose?
A: I take that as a compliment.
Q: Do you ever get job offers to do this for a living?
A: yes, quite often
Q: Why don't you take any of them?
A: - I don't want to move away from Somersworth.
- I love my day job (teaching 3rd grade).
Q: Have you ever seen that Snickers commercial where the guy is painting the endzone
of a football field only to realize that he's painted the word "CHEFS" instead of
"CHIEFS"?
A: Yes, that's one of my favorite commercials. I wish it was still on. You've gotta have
a sense of humor.
